Paleogenomic Study of 4,000-Year-Old 'Afanasievo' Remains Maps the Earliest Genetic Pulse of Indo-European Expansion into the Altai

A large-scale genomic analysis published in Cell Reports: Paleogenomics has mapped the earliest genetic pulse of Indo-European expansion into the Altai Mountains. By analyzing the remains of 4,000-year-old Afanasievo culture individuals, researchers identified a direct ancestral link to the Yamnaya steppe populations of the Pontic-Caspian region.

The study provides clear evidence of a rapid, long-distance migration that bypassed central Asian settlements, suggesting that these early horse-riding pastoralists moved in highly organized waves. This data offers a critical piece of the puzzle regarding the spread of Indo-European languages and the technological transfer of chariot and wheel technology across Eurasia.
