Previously Unknown 10th-Century Commentary on Bhartrihari's 'Vakyapadiya' Found in a Remote Odisha Monastery

A palm-leaf manuscript found in the rafters of a neglected matha in the Ganjam district of Odisha has been identified as a lost commentary on Bhartrihari’s Vakyapadiya. The text, titled Shabda-Sphota-Vivrti, explores the 'Philosophy of Language' and the metaphysical concept of Shabda-Brahman (the Ultimate Reality as Sound). It offers a radical interpretation of how linguistic units (sphota) trigger instant holistic understanding in the human mind.

The manuscript is significant because it bridge-links the linguistic theories of the 5th century with the later Tantric philosophies of the 11th century. It suggests that ancient Indian grammarians viewed language not merely as a tool for communication, but as the very structure of cosmic manifestation. Conservationists are currently using multispectral imaging to preserve the fragile leaves.
