Archaeologists Unearth 2nd-Century BCE Greco-Buddhist Temple with Stucco Reliefs in Pakistan's Swat Valley

Archaeologists working in the Barikot region of the Swat Valley have announced the discovery of a remarkably well-preserved Greco-Buddhist temple dating back to the 2nd century BCE. The structure features a unique blend of Hellenistic and Gandharan architectural styles, including Corinthian capitals and circular stupa foundations. The find is being hailed as one of the oldest known Buddhist sacred sites in the region.

The excavation team uncovered intact stucco reliefs depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha, alongside Greek-style floral motifs. These artifacts suggest a high degree of cultural synthesis during the Indo-Greek period. Preliminary analysis indicates that the temple remained an active site of worship for over five centuries before being abandoned due to seismic activity.
