UNESCO Inscribes the 'Traditional Transhumance Trails of the Balkan Highlands' as Urgent Intangible Heritage

UNESCO has officially added the Balkan Transhumance Trails to the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. These ancient migratory routes, used for millennia by shepherds to move livestock between summer and winter pastures, are under threat from modern land privatization and rural depopulation in countries like Albania, Greece, and North Macedonia.

The designation aims to preserve the traditional knowledge of folk medicine, cheese-making, and oral storytelling that evolved along these paths. UNESCO has pledged emergency funding to establish 'Heritage Corridors' that will allow traditional pastoralists to move freely across borders, ensuring that this living history does not vanish as the younger generation migrates to urban centers.
