Germany’s Ethnological Museum Repatriates Rare 17th-Century 'Kingdom of Kongo' Royal Insignia to Angola

In a significant move toward cultural restitution, the Ethnological Museum in Berlin has formally returned a collection of 17th-century royal regalia to the Republic of Angola. The artifacts, which include an ornate ceremonial staff and a sacred leopard-skin headdress, were originally seized during the colonial era and are considered vital to the heritage of the Kingdom of Kongo.

Angolan officials stated that the return of these items marks a new era of diplomatic and cultural cooperation between the two nations. The regalia will be housed in a newly inaugurated wing of the National Museum of Anthropology in Luanda, where they will serve as the centerpiece for an exhibition on pre-colonial African governance.
