12th-Century 'Saundarya-Mala' Manuscript Discovered in Odisha Details the Philosophy of Perception in Sacred Architecture

A 12th-century palm-leaf manuscript titled 'Saundarya-Mala' (The Garland of Beauty) has been discovered in a hidden vault of the Lingaraj Temple complex in Odisha. Unlike traditional art manuals, this text is a rigorous work of aesthetics and epistemology, detailing how the perception of sacred architecture can lead to 'Pratyaksa-Jnana', or direct intuitive knowledge of the divine.

The manuscript explains the philosophy of space (Akasa-Vada), arguing that temple geometry is designed to alter the observer’s cognitive state by mirroring the internal structures of the human mind. This find is significant as it provides a theoretical bridge between the physical act of building and the metaphysical pursuit of liberation, elevating architectural theory to a major philosophical school.
