Submerged 16th-Century 'Spanish Treasure Galleon' Identified off Guam with Cargo of Rare Ming Dynasty Porcelain

Marine archaeologists have located the remains of a Spanish galleon that sank in 1598 while traveling from Manila to Acapulco. The wreck, located in deep waters off the coast of Guam, has yielded a significant cargo of Ming Dynasty porcelain, including pristine blue-and-white bowls and jars intended for the Spanish market.

The wreck site was found using autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) that mapped the debris field across the seabed. In addition to the ceramics, the team has recovered several silver coins, which are currently undergoing conservation to prevent deterioration from saltwater exposure.
