Italy Returns 'The Orpheus Hoard' – A Collection of 400 Ancient Greek Artifacts – to the Republic of Cyprus

In a landmark act of Mediterranean cooperation, the Italian government has returned 'The Orpheus Hoard' to the Republic of Cyprus. The collection, consisting of over 400 artifacts including rare Mycenaean ceramics, gold jewelry, and limestone votive statues, was seized by Italian carabinieri from an illegal trafficking ring in the late 1990s.

The repatriation was made possible by the Nicosia Convention, which simplifies the legal process for returning cultural property to its country of origin within the EU. The artifacts are slated for a special exhibition at the Cyprus Museum, where they will be analyzed to trace their original provenance back to looted sanctuary sites in the Paphos district.
