Underwater Survey of Lake Ohrid Reveals Submerged 'Stilt-Village' Ritual Platforms for Water Festivals

A high-resolution sonar and diving survey of Lake Ohrid has identified a series of timber platforms extending into the deeper waters, separate from the domestic areas of the Neolithic stilt villages. These structures are littered with intact ceramic vessels containing fruit seeds and fish bones, interpreted as 'offerings to the depths' during annual solstice water festivals.

The preservation provided by the lake's sediment has allowed for the recovery of woven reed baskets that held these offerings. These findings suggest that the prehistoric inhabitants of the Balkans practiced a complex form of limnic worship, where the lake itself was the focus of seasonal processions and ritualized gift-giving to ensure a successful fishing season.
