Submerged 5,000-Year-Old 'Neolithic Pile-Dwellings' Identified in Lake Zurich Using High-Resolution Sonar

A team of underwater archaeologists has identified a previously unknown Neolithic settlement submerged beneath the waters of Lake Zurich. Utilizing state-of-the-art high-resolution sonar and underwater drones, the researchers mapped dozens of wooden piles that once supported lake-side dwellings. The anaerobic conditions of the lake bed have remarkably preserved organic materials, including woven basketry, wooden tool handles, and remnants of fishing nets.

The settlement dates back to approximately 3,000 BCE and represents one of the most significant finds of its kind in Switzerland. The density of the structures suggests a highly organized community that relied on a combination of early agriculture and lacustrine resources. Divers are currently working to recover core samples from the timber piles to perform dendrochronological dating, which could pinpoint the exact years of the settlement's construction and abandonment.
