Fossil of a New 85-Million-Year-Old 'Abelisaurid' Predator with Unique Horn Structure Discovered in Argentina

Paleontologists in the Neuquén Province of Argentina have announced the discovery of a new species of Abelisaurid dinosaur, a group of bipedal predators known for their short, stubby arms. The nearly complete skeleton, dating to the Late Cretaceous, features a unique set of dual keratinous horns above the eyes, unlike any other known member of the family. This specimen, named 'Carnotyrannus austrinus,' would have reached lengths of up to seven meters.

The fossil was found in a remote desert region known for its rich dinosaur beds. Researchers believe the specialized skull anatomy indicates a unique combat or display behavior within the species. The preservation of the braincase is particularly significant, as it will allow scientists to perform CT scans to study the predator's sensory capabilities and balance, providing new data on how these apex predators dominated the Southern Hemisphere.
