UNESCO Inscribes the 'Traditional Reed-Sailing Cultural Landscapes of Lake Titicaca' to the World Heritage List

UNESCO has recognized the Uru-Chipaya reed-building traditions of Lake Titicaca as a World Heritage Site. The designation covers the cultural landscape of the floating islands and the ancient knowledge required to construct totora reed vessels, which have navigated the high-altitude waters of the Andes for millennia.

The inscription aims to protect the intangible heritage of the Uru people, whose lifestyle is increasingly threatened by environmental changes and water pollution. By granting World Heritage status, UNESCO hopes to facilitate sustainable tourism that supports the continuation of these ancient maritime techniques and the preservation of the lake's fragile biodiversity.
