10th-Century 'Nagvanshi' Dynasty Temple Ruins Found in Dense Bastar Forest Reveal Unique Tribal-Hindu Iconography

Deep within the Indravati Tiger Reserve in Chhattisgarh, researchers have located the ruins of a 10th-century temple belonging to the Chhindaka Nagvanshi dynasty. The temple is built from local red sandstone and features a unique blend of classical Hindu architecture and indigenous tribal motifs, including representations of forest spirits and local flora not seen in mainstream Nagara temples.

Restoration teams from the state archaeology department are now working to stabilize the crumbling Vimana. The site also includes a series of memorial stones (Hero stones) that narrate the defense of the temple against northern invaders, providing a rare historical record of the medieval tribal kingdoms of Central India.
