In a technological milestone for maritime archaeology, the first application of 'Quantum-Lidar' has successfully mapped a series of previously unknown Neolithic pile-dwelling villages submerged in Lake Constance. Unlike traditional sonar, this new laser-based system can penetrate deep silt layers to create high-resolution 3D models of organic materials, such as wooden posts and woven fences, without disturbing the lakebed.
The scan revealed the remains of over fifty structures arranged in a circular defensive pattern, dating to approximately 3,800 BCE. The clarity of the data allows researchers to identify individual tool marks on the timber, providing an unprecedented look into the carpentry techniques of early European farmers. This non-invasive technology is expected to revolutionize the study of submerged heritage sites globally, particularly in areas where murky water has historically blocked traditional optical sensors.
