Sunken 5th-Century BCE 'Classical Greek War-Galley' Identified off the Coast of Chios with Intact Bronze Ram

A deep-sea expedition off the island of Chios has located the wreck of a 5th-century BCE Greek war-galley. Unlike typical merchant ships found in the Aegean, this vessel was built for speed and combat, featuring an intact bronze ram weighing nearly 300 kilograms still attached to the prow.

The ship's hold contains stacks of heavy hoplite shields and several bronze helmets, suggesting it was part of a naval engagement during the Peloponnesian War. This is one of the few examples of a trireme-class hull structure to be studied in situ, offering invaluable data on ancient naval architecture and metalworking.
