Archaeologists Uncover 9th-Century 'Sailendra Dynasty' Hindu Temple Foundations in Central Java's Progo Valley

New excavations in the Progo Valley of Central Java have revealed the structural foundations of a 9th-century Hindu temple linked to the Sailendra Dynasty. Unlike the more common Buddhist monuments of the period, this site features a layout dedicated to Shiva, suggesting a complex religious syncretism in the Javanese royal courts.

The foundation stones show evidence of advanced drainage systems designed to mitigate the heavy tropical rainfall of the region. Researchers believe the temple was part of a larger administrative and religious hub that connected the maritime trade routes of the Indian Ocean with the inland agricultural powerhouses of Java.
