Archaeologists in Peru have identified a previously unknown ritual platform at over 5,000 meters above sea level on Mount Ampato. This ceremonial structure, linked to the Capacocha ritual cycle, contains intricate stone masonry aligned with the summer solstice. Excavations revealed a cache of miniature gold and silver figurines, as well as Spondylus shell offerings, which were traditionally used to petition the mountain deities for rain during times of drought.
This discovery is significant because it suggests that the Inca maintained a much more extensive and high-altitude network of seasonal festival sites than previously recorded. Unlike the state-level celebrations in Cusco, these high-altitude rites were targeted interventions designed to synchronize the empire's agricultural calendar with the erratic climate of the Andes, demonstrating a sophisticated blend of astronomical observation and state-sponsored ritual.
