UNESCO Inscribes the 'Prehistoric Salt-Spring Cultural Landscapes of the Carpathian Foothills' to World Heritage List

UNESCO has officially added the Prehistoric Salt-Spring Cultural Landscapes of the Carpathian Foothills to the World Heritage List, recognizing the site as one of the oldest and most continuous salt-extraction operations in human history. Spanning regions in modern-day Romania and Ukraine, the site preserves unique archaeological evidence of neolithic brine-boiling techniques that date back over 8,000 years, highlighting the vital role of salt in early European social and economic structures.

The designation includes protected zones for ancient wooden filtration systems and ceremonial pits where evidence of salt-related rituals was discovered. This move is expected to bolster transnational conservation efforts and provide significant funding for the preservation of the fragile wooden structures that have survived due to the high saline concentration of the surrounding soil.
