Switzerland Repatriates Rare 2,000-Year-Old 'Nok' Terracotta Heads to Nigeria Following Private Collection Seizure

The Swiss Federal Office of Culture has officially returned two rare Nok terracotta heads to the Nigerian government. The artifacts, which date back to roughly 500 BCE, were seized by Swiss customs several years ago during a routine inspection of a private shipment. After a lengthy legal battle and forensic testing, the items were confirmed to be looted from the Jos Plateau region of Nigeria, a major center for the early Iron Age Nok culture.

Nok terracottas are highly prized for their unique hairstyles and stylized facial features, making them prime targets for the illicit antiquities trade. This repatriation is seen as a victory for the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property, reinforcing Switzerland's commitment to returning stolen heritage to its country of origin.
