Restoration of 11th-Century 'Vanga-Style' Brick Temple in West Bengal Reveals Rare Terracotta Narrative Panels

A major restoration project in the Bankura district of West Bengal has led to the uncovering of rare terracotta panels on a 11th-century 'Vanga-style' brick temple. These panels, which were previously obscured by thick layers of lime plaster added during later centuries, depict lost maritime trade routes and early rural life in the Bengal delta. Experts from the State Heritage Commission noted that the level of detail in the terracotta craftsmanship is unparalleled for this specific stylistic period.

The restoration team is using specialized chemical cleaning agents to remove the lime without damaging the fragile baked clay underneath. These findings provide a fresh perspective on the socio-economic history of the region, highlighting the global connections of 11th-century Bengal through its sacred architecture. The temple is expected to be reopened to the public by the end of the year once structural stabilization is complete.
