Climate Archaeology: Receding Himalayan Glaciers Reveal 2,000-Year-Old High-Altitude 'Silk Road' Shelters

In a striking example of climate archaeology, the rapid melting of glaciers in the Spiti Valley has revealed the remains of high-altitude stone shelters used by ancient traders on a forgotten spur of the Silk Road. Preliminary dating of organic materials found at the site, including yak-wool textiles and birch-bark manuscripts, places the settlement between the 1st and 3rd centuries CE.

These structures provided critical refuge for caravans navigating the treacherous mountain passes between India and Tibet. Archaeologists noted that the site was preserved in a permafrost state for nearly two millennia, allowing for the recovery of extremely fragile items. However, experts warn that as the ice continues to recede, these newly exposed heritage sites are at immediate risk of rapid decay and require urgent documentation and stabilization efforts.
