Researchers using AI-driven digital reconstruction have successfully restored a series of fragmented 12th-century manuscripts from the Mithila region, known for its contributions to Navya-Nyaya (New Logic). The restoration has unveiled a complex system of symbolic notations used by medieval logicians to represent formal arguments, which bears a striking resemblance to modern set theory and predicate logic.
The fragments, titled Tarka-Lakshana, detail a rigorous method for defining 'Invariable Concomitance' (Vyapti), a cornerstone of Indian inference. This breakthrough demonstrates the incredible mathematical and logical sophistication of the Mithila school, proving that ancient Indian philosophers had developed formal symbolic systems long before similar advancements in the West.
