UNESCO has officially designated the complex hydraulic engineering systems of the Zagros foothills in Iran as a World Heritage Site. These ancient networks, dating back over 2,500 years, consist of an intricate series of qanats, cisterns, and gravity-fed irrigation channels that allowed for the flourishing of agriculture in an arid environment. The site is recognized not only for its historical engineering significance but also for its continued use by local communities today.
The designation comes after a decade-long conservation effort aimed at documenting the subterranean structures and restoring the traditional knowledge required for their maintenance. UNESCO experts noted that the Zagros Water Management System serves as a critical model for sustainable water usage in the face of modern climate challenges, offering lessons in ancient resilience and ecological balance.
