Intact 5th-Century 'Sogdian Diplomatic Archive' on Birch Bark Found in Remote Tajikistan Mountain Pass

Archaeologists exploring a high-altitude rock shelter in Tajikistan's Fansky Mountains have discovered an exceptionally preserved archive of diplomatic correspondence written on birch bark. The documents, written in the Sogdian script, detail a series of strategic marriages and trade treaties between the city-states of Central Asia and the Gupta Empire of India. This find is being hailed as the 'Dead Sea Scrolls of the Silk Road' due to its pristine condition and historical importance.

The archive includes over 40 scrolls, many of which discuss the security of caravan routes and the taxation of luxury goods such as musk and sandalwood. Because the shelter remained dry and frozen for over 1,500 years, the ink remains legible, offering new insights into the complex geopolitics of the 5th century. This discovery confirms that Sogdian merchants acted not just as traders, but as high-level diplomats across the Eurasian landmass.
