Mexico’s National Museum of Anthropology Repatriates Sacred 'Takutsi' Ritual Jars to the Wixárika Nation

Mexico’s National Museum of Anthropology has completed the repatriation of several sacred 'Takutsi' ritual jars to the Wixárika (Huichol) people of the Sierra Madre Occidental. These vessels, used for centuries in rain-making ceremonies, were acquired by the museum in the early 20th century without the consent of tribal elders.

The return marks a significant shift in Mexico's domestic heritage policy, focusing on the restoration of ancestral objects to living Indigenous communities rather than centralizing them in state museums. The Wixárika elders stated that the jars' return is essential for the spiritual health and agricultural continuity of their nation.
