Vibrant 12,000-Year-Old 'Geometric Star-Map' Murals Discovered in a Remote Cavern in the Guaviare Amazon

A groundbreaking discovery in the Guaviare region of the Colombian Amazon has revealed a series of vibrant rock paintings that appear to represent a celestial star-map. The murals, executed in deep red ochre, consist of complex geometric patterns, interconnected dots, and radiating lines that align with specific constellations visible in the Southern Hemisphere 12,000 years ago. These findings were located in a cave system accessible only by river.

Anthropologists suggest that these paintings served as a mnemonic device for seasonal migration and ritual calendars among early Amazonian hunter-gatherer groups. Unlike the naturalistic depictions of megafauna found elsewhere in the region, these abstract designs indicate a high level of mathematical and astronomical sophistication. The site is currently being documented using 3D laser scanning to preserve the fragile pigments.
