Intact 5th-Dynasty 'Overseer of the Royal Granaries' Tomb Uncovered in Saqqara with Rare Painted Harvest Reliefs

A joint Egyptian-International mission has unveiled a pristine tomb in the Saqqara Necropolis belonging to a high official named Sekhem-ka, who served as the Overseer of the Royal Granaries during the 5th Dynasty. The burial chamber is remarkably well-preserved, featuring vibrant wall paintings that depict the entire cycle of ancient Egyptian agriculture, from the tilling of the Nile silt to the measuring of grain in the pharaoh's storehouses.

Of particular interest to historians are the detailed inscriptions listing grain yields and distribution quotas, which offer a rare glimpse into the economic management of the Old Kingdom. The tomb also contained a set of limestone statues of the deceased and his family, as well as several miniature wooden models of granaries intended to provide sustenance for the official in the afterlife.
