UNESCO Inscribes the 'Submerged Karst Systems of the Bahamas' as World Heritage for Unparalleled Paleoclimate Records

UNESCO has officially designated the extensive underwater cave networks and blue holes of the Bahamas as a new World Heritage site. These geological formations are recognized not only for their unique beauty but for containing the world's most pristine paleoclimate records. Stalagmites and sediment cores extracted from these submerged caves provide a 100,000-year-old timeline of sea-level fluctuations and hurricane frequency, offering vital data for modern climate modeling.

Archaeologists accompanying the UNESCO delegation noted that the oxygen-free environments within the blue holes have also preserved Lucayan Lucayan indigenous artifacts and extinct megafauna remains in extraordinary detail. The designation includes an international commitment to regulate deep-sea exploration and diving within these fragile karst systems to prevent contamination of the ancient chemical signatures found in the cave walls.
