A team of spelaeologists exploring a remote limestone cave system in Bulgaria has discovered a hidden chamber containing some of the oldest cave paintings in Europe. The gallery features dozens of red-ochre depictions of extinct Ice Age animals, including woolly rhinoceroses, cave lions, and giant deer, executed with a high level of anatomical detail.
Radiocarbon dating of charcoal fragments found near the paintings confirms they were created approximately 40,000 years ago by early modern humans. This find is revolutionary as it demonstrates that sophisticated artistic traditions and symbolic behavior were widespread across the Balkan Peninsula much earlier than previously thought, rivaling the famous sites of Western Europe.
