Submerged 'Crystal-Mirror' Altar Found in a Yucatán Cenote Points to Ancient Maya 'Lunar-Reflection' Festivals

Divers exploring a deep sinkhole near Chichén Itzá have discovered a submerged stone platform lined with polished hematite and mica, creating a 'crystal-mirror' effect. The altar, located 15 meters underwater, is positioned directly beneath the cenote's opening. Underwater lighting analysis reveals that during a full moon, the light reflects off the platform to illuminate the entire cavern, suggesting it was used for lunar-reflection festivals.

This discovery points to a highly specialized Maya fertility rite centered on the moon goddess, Ixchel. Archaeologists recovered hundreds of small ceramic frog figurines and jade beads from the silt surrounding the altar. These findings suggest that participants would gather at the cenote's edge to witness the 'capture' of the moon's light on the water's surface, a ceremony intended to ensure the vitality of the water table during the dry season.
