Researchers Identify the 'Mica Trail': A 2,000-Year-Old Trade Route Linking the Deccan Plateau to the Roman Empire

New geochemical analysis of mica used in Roman cosmetics and decorative wall plasters has traced the mineral back to mines in South-Central India. This 'Mica Trail' suggests a far more robust overland and maritime exchange between the Satavahana Dynasty and the Roman Mediterranean than previously recorded.

Archaeologists believe the mica was transported via ancient ports on the Malabar Coast before crossing the Indian Ocean. This discovery highlights the Roman elite's demand for luxury minerals and the sophisticated logistics of ancient global trade networks during the 2nd century CE.
