1st-Century Roman 'Veterinary Field Hospital' for War Horses and Pack Animals Discovered in Northern Bulgaria

Archaeologists have unearthed a large military complex near the Danube river in Bulgaria that served as a specialized Roman veterinary field hospital. Dating to the late 1st century CE, the facility was part of a larger legionary camp and contains specialized stalls for resting animals and a pharmacy with residues of medicinal salves.

Among the finds are a set of unique iron surgical tools, including cauterizing irons and precision shears, specifically designed for treating equine injuries. This discovery provides the most comprehensive evidence to date of the Imperial Roman Army's sophisticated logistics system, which prioritized the health and recovery of the thousands of horses and mules essential for trans-European military campaigns.
