Engineers at the University of Pisa have unveiled a revolutionary preservation system using graphene-based nano-sensors to monitor the structural integrity of the iconic Leaning Tower. Unlike traditional sensors, these ultra-thin layers are integrated directly into the mortar joints of the marble exterior, allowing for real-time monitoring of micro-fissures and vibrations at an atomic scale.
The data collected by the sensors is analyzed by a digital twin AI, which predicts how the tower will react to seismic events or extreme thermal expansion caused by rising summer temperatures. This technology represents a significant leap in heritage preservation, offering a non-invasive way to 'listen' to the building's internal stress without damaging its historic fabric. Similar deployments are now planned for the Pantheon and the Colosseum.
