Restoration of 13th-Century 'Gajapati' Dynasty Temple in Puri Hinterlands Unveils Hidden 'Navagraha' Friezes

Conservation work at a lesser-known 13th-century shrine in the Puri hinterlands has led to the discovery of hidden stone panels depicting the Navagrahas (nine planets). These friezes were found behind a thick layer of secondary brickwork added during the 18th century for structural support. The carvings are in the classic Kalinga style, showcasing the transition of the Gajapati dynasty's artistic patronage.

Experts from the Odisha State Archaeology Department state that the panels are in near-perfect condition, with original traces of mineral pigments still visible. The find is significant because it depicts the deities with unique regional attributes and postures not commonly seen in the more famous Sun Temple of Konark, providing a broader perspective on medieval Odishan iconography.

The restoration involves carefully removing the non-original masonry and replacing it with concealed stainless-steel supports. Once completed, the temple will be integrated into a local heritage circuit to promote tourism in the rural interior of the state, highlighting the vast network of sacred sites beyond the main coastal cities.
