Discovery of a 2,500-Year-Old 'Celtic Gem-Cutting Studio' with Intact Amber Hoard in the Czech Highlands

Archaeologists in the Bohemian Highlands have uncovered a specialized Iron Age workshop used by Celtic artisans to process Baltic amber and semi-precious stones. The site yielded an extraordinary hoard of over 500 amber beads in various stages of production, along with tiny iron drills and abrasive stones used for precision carving and polishing.

This find suggests that the Boii tribe, who inhabited the region during the 4th century BCE, were not merely traders of raw materials but were master jewelers who added significant value to the amber flowing along northern trade routes. The studio's proximity to a major hillfort indicates that high-status craft production was a central component of Celtic urban life in Central Europe.
