Discovery of 'Vermilion-Painted' Ritual Skulls in Tlaxcala Points to 800-Year-Old Roots of Tlacaxipehualiztli Festival

Archaeologists working at the Ocotelulco site in Tlaxcala have unearthed a significant ritual deposit containing skulls decorated with vermilion pigment. This find is directly linked to the Tlacaxipehualiztli festival, or the "Flaying of Men," a major ceremony dedicated to the god Xipe Totec.

The discovery provides new data on the Postclassic period rituals, suggesting that these ceremonies were central to regional identity and agricultural cycles. Excavators also found associated sacrificial knives made of green obsidian, indicating the high status of the ritual participants.
