UNESCO Designates the 'Traditional Terraced Water-Gardens of the Anti-Atlas' as a Site of Global Cultural Resilience

UNESCO has officially granted a new specialized status of 'Global Cultural Resilience' to the ancient terraced water-gardens found in Morocco's Anti-Atlas mountains. These systems, which utilize a sophisticated network of stone-lined channels to divert seasonal runoff into multi-tiered agricultural plots, have been continuously managed by local Berber communities for over 800 years. The designation aims to protect not just the physical structures but the intangible traditional knowledge required to maintain these sustainable ecosystems.

The committee noted that the Anti-Atlas terraces represent one of the most successful historical adaptations to arid environments. By recognizing the site, UNESCO hopes to provide international funding to repair structural damage caused by recent extreme flash flooding while encouraging younger generations to stay in the region and continue the practice of traditional mountain farming.
