Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest Formally Repatriates 26th Dynasty 'Saite' Sarcophagus to Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities

The Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest has officially returned an ornate 26th Dynasty 'Saite' Sarcophagus to the Egyptian government. The wooden coffin, decorated with vibrant hieroglyphs and scenes from the Book of the Dead, was identified as having been illegally excavated from the Saqqara necropolis in the early 20th century. The repatriation is part of a broader cooperation agreement between Hungary and Egypt to combat the illicit trade in cultural property.

The artifact was welcomed back in a ceremony at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, where it will undergo a brief conservation process before being placed on permanent display. Egyptian officials praised the Hungarian museum for its transparency and for setting a precedent in voluntary restitution based on modern ethical standards rather than strict legal mandates.
