7th-Century 'Karman-Siddhi' Manuscript Discovered in Coastal Odisha Outlines the Philosophy of Deliberate Agency

Marine archaeologists and heritage scholars have recovered a 7th-century copper-plate manuscript from a waterlogged site near the ancient port of Konark. The text, titled 'Karman-Siddhi' (The Attainment of Action), presents a rigorous debate on the nature of human agency (Kartrtva). It distinguishes between Kriya (reflexive or habitual action) and Karma (intentional, ethically-charged action), arguing that only the latter leads to spiritual and social evolution.

The manuscript is unique for its focus on the 'Philosophy of the Will,' suggesting that the power to choose is the defining characteristic of the human soul (Atman). This find provides significant new material for the study of ancient Indian theories of free will and moral responsibility, occurring at a time when Odisha was a major hub for both maritime trade and philosophical discourse.
