The 'Abalone-and-Obsidian' Seaway: Mapping 5,000-Year-Old Trade Between the Channel Islands and Baja California

Marine archaeologists have identified a previously unknown maritime trade network connecting the Northern Channel Islands off the coast of California to the Baja Peninsula. Labeled the 'Abalone-and-Obsidian' Seaway, the research utilizes isotopic analysis of shell artifacts and volcanic glass found in coastal middens. The study suggests that prehistoric seafaring cultures utilized sophisticated plank-built canoes to traverse over 400 miles of open ocean as early as 3,000 BCE.

The discovery of Rainbow Obsidian fragments from the interior of Mexico in Channel Island sites indicates a complex exchange of luxury goods. In return, the islanders traded highly prized abalone shell discs and purple-olive snail beads, which have been found in high-status burials across Baja. This research fundamentally reshapes our understanding of the maritime capabilities and economic integration of early North American coastal societies.
