Ancient "Cloud-Caller" Platforms Unearthed in Zimbabwe’s Matobo Hills Reveal Origins of Regional Rain Rites

Archaeologists working in the Matobo Hills of Zimbabwe have announced the discovery of a series of monumental stone platforms dating back over 1,500 years. These structures, distinct from the later Great Zimbabwe tradition, appear to have served as the focal point for "Cloud-Calling" festivals, where ancient communities gathered to petition for the arrival of the summer rains. The excavation revealed specialized acoustic chambers beneath the platforms designed to amplify the sound of ritual drumming.

Evidence found at the site includes charred remains of aromatic resins and high concentrations of bird-themed pottery. Researchers believe these findings bridge a significant gap in the understanding of southern African spiritual history, showing that large-scale communal festivals were a cornerstone of social organization long before the rise of the region's major medieval empires.
