UNESCO Inscribes the 'Prehistoric Rock-Art Landscapes of the Tibesti Mountains' to World Heritage List

In a landmark session held in Paris, UNESCO has officially inscribed the Tibesti Mountains of Chad and Libya onto the World Heritage List. The site is home to one of the world's most significant collections of prehistoric rock art, with thousands of engravings and paintings dating back over 8,000 years. These works provide a unique chronicle of the Saharan environment's transition from a lush, humid savanna to the arid desert of today.

The designation was fast-tracked under the Emergency Protection framework to mobilize international resources for the site's preservation. Ongoing regional instability and the threat of illegal looting had placed these fragile petroglyphs at risk. The new status will facilitate the implementation of satellite monitoring and community-led conservation programs to safeguard the intricate depictions of megafauna and early human rituals.
