4,000-Year-Old 'Sumerian Master of the Royal Chariots' Archive and Bronze Axle-Templates Found in Ancient Girsu

Excavations at the ancient city of Girsu in southern Iraq have yielded a specialized cuneiform archive belonging to the "Master of the Royal Chariot Workshops." The tablets document the procurement of seasoned timber from the Zagros Mountains and the specific weights of bronze required for reinforced wheels and axle-hubs during the Third Dynasty of Ur.

Alongside the texts, archaeologists found intact bronze casting templates for linchpins and decorative harness fittings. This find is the first to detail the standardized military manufacturing processes of the early Mesopotamian states, revealing a highly organized system of quality control for royal transport.
