A survey in West Wales has revealed a significant Iron Age enclosure that appears to have been the site of a specialized 'White-Horse' fertility festival. Excavations led by the National Trust uncovered a series of post-holes that once supported a wooden grandstand, overlooking a central arena where evidence of ritual equine burial and decorative bronze harness pieces were found.
Analysis suggests the festival took place during the peak of spring. The presence of non-local pottery indicates that travelers from across the British Isles may have congregated here to participate in horse-trading and spiritual ceremonies intended to bless the health and speed of their livestock for the coming year.
