Excavation of a 3,000-Year-Old 'Silver-Tongued' Ritual Trumpet in the Alps Linked to Ancient Celtic Alpine Pasture Festivals

Archaeologists in the Swiss Alps have recovered a remarkably preserved bronze trumpet with a silver-coated mouthpiece from a high-altitude lake. The instrument, dated to the late Bronze Age, is believed to have been used to signal the beginning of the Alpabzug—the traditional descent of cattle from the mountains—during ancient seasonal festivals.

The trumpet's unique design allowed for a sound that could carry across vast distances. Its presence at the bottom of the lake suggests it was offered as a final ritual act at the end of the grazing season, providing the first physical evidence of the ceremonial importance of seasonal pastoral movements in the pre-Roman Alpine world.
