The 'Beryl and Spice' Way: Researchers Uncover 2,000-Year-Old Maritime Route Linking the Red Sea to the Malabar Coast

Archaeologists have identified a previously unknown maritime trade link, dubbed the 'Beryl and Spice' Way, which connected the Red Sea port of Berenike directly to the Malabar Coast of India. The discovery was made through the chemical analysis of beryl gemstones found in Egyptian tombs, which matched the unique geological signature of mines in southern India. This route suggests a more direct and frequent exchange than previously estimated for the 1st century CE.

The research, published in Nature, indicates that luxury commodities like emeralds, black pepper, and fine textiles were traded for Roman glassware and Mediterranean wines. The findings provide new insights into the complexities of ancient globalized trade and the early seafaring capabilities required to navigate the Indian Ocean's monsoon winds.
