8th-Century 'Mimamsa-Pramana' Scroll Found in Ujjain Offers New Insights into the Epistemology of Vedic Testimony

During a renovation of an ancient matha in Ujjain, researchers discovered a birch-bark scroll containing a lost treatise on the Mimamsa school of philosophy. The document, titled Mimamsa-Pramana, focuses on the validity of verbal testimony (Shabda) as a primary source of knowledge. It presents a radical argument for the 'self-validating' nature of truth, a cornerstone of Vedic epistemology that has long intrigued modern cognitive scientists.

The text is attributed to a student of the legendary philosopher Kumarila Bhatta and provides a counter-narrative to the skeptical traditions of the time. By detailing the linguistic structures necessary for flawless communication of wisdom, the scroll sheds light on the rigorous intellectual training of ancient Indian scholars. It is currently being housed at the Vikram University archives for further preservation.
