Rare 10th-Century 'Kalachuri' Shiva Temple with Mercury-Cored Foundation Identified in Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh

Archaeologists from the state department have unearthed a significant 10th-century Shiva Temple in the dense forests of Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh. The structure belongs to the Kalachuri dynasty and is unique due to its architectural foundation. Preliminary excavation revealed a network of sealed terracotta pipes filled with mercury, a find that suggests advanced metallurgical knowledge used for seismic stabilization during the medieval period.

The temple's outer walls are adorned with intricate friezes of celestial dancers and musicians. Experts believe this site was a major pilgrimage center on the ancient trade route connecting central India to the eastern coast. Restoration efforts are now focused on preserving the delicate sandstone carvings and stabilizing the unique foundation before the monsoon season begins.
