Hidden 'Acoustic Grain-Storage' Pits Discovered Beneath 13th-Century Yadava Trikuta Temple in Marathwada

Archaeologists working on the structural conservation of a 13th-century Yadava Trikuta Temple in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra have stumbled upon a unique dual-purpose infrastructure. Beneath the stone flooring of the northern shrine, they found four large bell-shaped storage pits. These pits were designed not only for storing sacred grains but also functioned as acoustic resonators, amplifying the sound of Vedic chants during temple rituals.

The discovery highlights the multifunctional nature of medieval Indian temples as community granaries and centers of sophisticated sound engineering. The Yadava dynasty architects are known for their 'Bhumija' style, but this is the first evidence of subterranean acoustic chambers in their structures. The pits are being mapped using 3D laser scanners to understand their exact sonic properties.
