LiDAR Mapping Reveals a Lost 1,500-Year-Old 'Tairona Mountain Citadel' in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia

Archaeologists using aerial LiDAR technology have identified a sprawling pre-Columbian urban center hidden beneath the jungle canopy of northern Colombia. The site, which covers over 50 hectares, features more than 200 circular stone terraces, complex drainage systems, and a series of paved mountain roads that connect the citadel to smaller satellite settlements in the surrounding valleys.

Initial ground surveys have uncovered ornate gold pectorals and ceremonial pottery belonging to the Tairona culture. Experts believe this 'Hidden City' was a major political and economic rival to the nearby Teyuna (Ciudad Perdida), functioning as a strategic high-altitude fortress and agricultural hub between the years 500 and 1100 CE.
